Archetyped! is an experiment in storytelling. Inspired by the likes of Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills and the works of Gregory Crewdson, I began my own foray into what I call, for lack of a better term, Narrative Imagery.
Narrative Imagery seems a misnomer. Don't all images tell a story? While engaged in this philosophical conundrum, I came across Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics." Clearly, his writing became a major influence on what would later come to be called Archetyped!
While the heavy references to comic book imagery certainly yields fertile ground, I don't want Archetyped! to be pages pulled from a comic book. Future imagery will include references to other narrative vehicles, such as television, movies, and the internet.
Aside from the McCloud books, I also found the shock/issue grids from "Shock" by Ben Lehman and Joshua AC Newman to be a very useful resource in solidifying the relationship between various elements in the Archetyped! world. The Gnomon Workshop also has a series on Visual Storytelling by Iain McCaig which has been very helpful. Direct examples of these will be forthcoming.
