Basics

January 25th, 2007,

The February issue of Imagine FX Magazine includes a workshop by Marko Djurdjevic on learning to overcome (or, more accurately, learning to harness) your fears.

Confidence in every decision is what makes art become relevant….Rules only apply if you let them dominate your work. A free mind can achieve anything, and whatever others may think of your work, it doesn’t matter as long as you enjoy what you’re doing.

There is also a very timely workshop by Francis Tsai on Sci-Fi Character design. In it, Mr Tsai reminds me of a particular fact which I had once known, which I would have done well to remember during my seasonal slump this winter: thinking is more effective on paper.

Such a simple fact, but one I often forget. There’s a reason we call it “getting lost in your own head.” Writing it down, or sketching it, provides a map by which we can more easily retrace our footsteps, and gives light to the landscape our mind wanders through.

I’m surprised and incredibly happy with this month’s issue. Usually, it focuses on illustrative and rendering techniques which exist in the genre I have been interested in exploring, but the mediums which I do not use. I was half-tempted to teach myself 3D animation just because the last two issues have concentrated on it so much. February, however, has focused on concept evolution, and just when I found myself stymied on Archetyped! simply because I was not writing my ideas down.
